A seminal and atmospheric photobook, Shinjuku Yo by Nobuyoshi Araki captures the restless energy and nocturnal intensity of Tokyo’s Shinjuku district in the early 1980s.

Published in Japan in 1984, this first edition reflects Araki’s distinctive fusion of documentary observation and diaristic practice. Moving fluidly between street scenes, intimate encounters, and fragments of urban life, the work constructs a portrait of Shinjuku that is both immediate and deeply subjective.

Araki’s lens reveals a city defined by contradiction—vibrant yet melancholic, seductive yet decaying. His images foreground the textures of nightlife and the presence of its inhabitants, rendering the district as a space of transience, desire, and quiet dislocation. The sequencing reinforces this sensibility, unfolding less as a linear narrative and more as a personal visual journal.

Though this copy is missing its original dust jacket, the publication remains a significant entry within Araki’s extensive body of work and an important document of postwar Japanese visual culture. Its rawness—both in content and condition—echoes the immediacy of the world it depicts.

A highly collectible volume for those engaged with Japanese photography, photobook culture, and the evolution of autobiographical image-making.

Intermission exists in the space between documentation and devotion an ongoing archive of cultural fragments that refuse to vanish. Each title within our portfolio is selected not for trend, but for tension: between what was meant to disappear and what insists on remaining.

We work with objects that speak quietly but persistently publications, recordings, and editions that define the undercurrents of art, sound, and design. Together they form a living record of marginal brilliance, a collection that privileges significance over scale.

Every Intermission title is handled as an artifact. We believe that preservation is an act of reverence one that begins the moment you open a cover or unspool a tape.

To experience a piece, do so slowly. Allow the air to touch the paper, let light fall softly over each page. Avoid excess pressure; handle edges rather than surfaces. Each mark, fold, or patina is part of its passage through time evidence of care rather than decay.

We encourage collectors to engage not only with the content, but with the gesture of preservation itself: a quiet commitment to memory.
