British photographer Gavin Watson returns with Oh! What Fun We Had, a vivid and deeply personal chronicle of youth culture in late 20th-century Britain. Known for his groundbreaking documentation of the skinhead movement, Watson expands his lens to reveal lesser-seen moments intimate, joyful, and unexpectedly tender within a subculture often misrepresented in mainstream narratives.
Building upon the legacy of his earlier works Skins (1994) and Skins & Punks (2008), this monograph dives further into Watson’s personal archive, tracing the lives of the ‘Wycombe Skins’ his younger brother Neville and their circle of friends. Raised on a council estate and immersed in ska music and working-class pride, these young people forged their own community in the face of economic hardship and media stigma.
Taking its name from a classic Madness track, Oh! What Fun We Had resists cliché by highlighting not the violence or politics often associated with the skinhead image, but the energy, humor, and strong bonds that shaped the movement from within. Watson’s lens captures the everyday mischief, parties, friendships, and fashion that defined a generation often with warmth and raw immediacy.
The book also offers rare insight into the roots of London’s underground party scene and the early stirrings of rave culture, showing how a rebellious youth aesthetic evolved into a broader creative force in music and fashion.
Authentic, unapologetic, and fiercely human, Oh! What Fun We Had is both an archive and a tribute an essential volume for anyone drawn to subcultural histories, youth identity, and street level documentary photography.
Intermission exists in the space between documentation and devotion an ongoing archive of cultural fragments that refuse to vanish. Each title within our portfolio is selected not for trend, but for tension: between what was meant to disappear and what insists on remaining.
We work with objects that speak quietly but persistently publications, recordings, and editions that define the undercurrents of art, sound, and design. Together they form a living record of marginal brilliance, a collection that privileges significance over scale.

Every Intermission title is handled as an artifact. We believe that preservation is an act of reverence one that begins the moment you open a cover or unspool a tape.
To experience a piece, do so slowly. Allow the air to touch the paper, let light fall softly over each page. Avoid excess pressure; handle edges rather than surfaces. Each mark, fold, or patina is part of its passage through time evidence of care rather than decay.
We encourage collectors to engage not only with the content, but with the gesture of preservation itself: a quiet commitment to memory.
