The first edition of November Girl, the third book by South African photographer Sam Haskins, was published by The Bodley Head in London in 1967 and printed in Switzerland by Heliographia S.A., Lausanne. Designed by Haskins himself, with typography by P. Digby Atkinson and text by Desmond Skirrow, the volume reflects his highly integrated approach to photography, sequencing, and book design.
November Girl completes the trajectory established by Five Girls (1962) and Cowboy Kate & Other Stories (1965). Where the first approached beauty through reportage and the second developed a photographic fable, this volume adopts a distinctly lyrical register. The sequence follows a young woman waiting for a man who never arrives, unfolding as an extended meditation on solitude, anticipation, absence, and longing.
Haskins treats the photobook as a complete visual composition. Image, pacing, page architecture, typography, and reproduction operate as interconnected elements, giving the work a cinematic rhythm while retaining the graphic precision characteristic of his photography. The result is less a conventional collection of photographs than a sustained piece of visual poetry.
The work occupies an important position within the history of figure photography in the 1960s. Haskins’ use of strong graphic control, high-contrast imagery, and carefully constructed sequences established a photographic language in which the body could function simultaneously as subject, form, and narrative presence.
The Swiss gravure-quality printing by Heliographia S.A. is integral to the character of the book, allowing Haskins’ tonal contrasts and fine photographic detail to translate with unusual clarity. Combined with his own design and sequencing, the production turns November Girl into a fully realized book object.
A significant first edition for collectors of twentieth-century photography, photobook history, and the development of the modern photographic treatment of the nude.

Intermission exists in the space between documentation and devotion an ongoing archive of cultural fragments that refuse to vanish. Each title within our portfolio is selected not for trend, but for tension: between what was meant to disappear and what insists on remaining.
We work with objects that speak quietly but persistently publications, recordings, and editions that define the undercurrents of art, sound, and design. Together they form a living record of marginal brilliance, a collection that privileges significance over scale.

Every Intermission title is handled as an artifact. We believe that preservation is an act of reverence one that begins the moment you open a cover or unspool a tape.
To experience a piece, do so slowly. Allow the air to touch the paper, let light fall softly over each page. Avoid excess pressure; handle edges rather than surfaces. Each mark, fold, or patina is part of its passage through time evidence of care rather than decay.
We encourage collectors to engage not only with the content, but with the gesture of preservation itself: a quiet commitment to memory.
