American photographer Richard Avedon presents In the American West, one of the most important and provocative photographic works of the twentieth century and widely regarded as his masterpiece.

Commissioned in 1979 by the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, In the American West is the result of a five-year project during which Avedon traveled through twenty-one western states, photographing more than a thousand ordinary working people against his signature seamless white backdrop.

Rejecting the romantic myth of the West's openness and grandeur, Avedon turned his camera instead toward its antithesis: miners, drifters, ranch hands, slaughterhouse workers, bar girls, gamblers, and other men and women rendered larger than life, confronting the camera with an intense and unguarded presence. First unveiled in 1985 to equal acclaim and controversy, the series stands as a defining moment in the history of contemporary portraiture.

This first British edition, published by Thames & Hudson simultaneously with the American Abrams edition, brings together more than 100 full-page black-and-white portraits, magnificently reproduced and accompanied by Avedon's own text on his photographic method and philosophy. Printed and bound in Japan, the volume remains a landmark of twentieth-century photographic publishing and one of the defining photobooks of the American West.
