Joseph Beuys & Nam June Paik Coyote III With Pianovariation 1984 captures a rare and historically charged moment of live collaboration between two central figures of postwar avant-garde practice. Recorded in Tokyo on June 2, 1984, this LP documents a simultaneous performance in which Beuys’ ritualistic vocal presence intersects with Paik’s radical approach to piano, sound, and time.
Rather than operating as a traditional musical recording, the work functions as a performative document an imprint of action, gesture, and conceptual intent. Beuys’ Coyote III continues his exploration of myth, shamanism, and symbolic language, while Paik’s Pianovariation 1984 destabilizes musical structure through repetition, interruption, and improvisation. Played together, the two compositions collapse into a single, dense sonic environment where authorship dissolves and collaboration becomes the primary medium.
The performance reflects the shared intellectual ground between Beuys and Paik, both deeply connected to Fluxus and to the idea of art as an active, transformative force rather than a static object. Sound here becomes sculpture in time an ephemeral event preserved only through its trace.
Issued decades later in a strictly limited unofficial edition, this record stands as an important archival artifact for collectors of experimental sound, performance documentation, and conceptual art history. It preserves not just a recording, but the residue of an encounter between two artists who fundamentally reshaped how art could be made, experienced, and understood.
Intermission exists in the space between documentation and devotion an ongoing archive of cultural fragments that refuse to vanish. Each title within our portfolio is selected not for trend, but for tension: between what was meant to disappear and what insists on remaining.
We work with objects that speak quietly but persistently publications, recordings, and editions that define the undercurrents of art, sound, and design. Together they form a living record of marginal brilliance, a collection that privileges significance over scale.

Every Intermission title is handled as an artifact. We believe that preservation is an act of reverence one that begins the moment you open a cover or unspool a tape.
To experience a piece, do so slowly. Allow the air to touch the paper, let light fall softly over each page. Avoid excess pressure; handle edges rather than surfaces. Each mark, fold, or patina is part of its passage through time evidence of care rather than decay.
We encourage collectors to engage not only with the content, but with the gesture of preservation itself: a quiet commitment to memory.
